For example:

Antecedents of Pronouns

An antecedent is the word or words to which a pronoun refers.
Example:
Sarah said that she would go.
She is the pronoun.
Sarah is the antecedent.

Preposition

Definition: A function word that combines with a noun or pronoun or noun phrase to form a prepositional phrase that can have an adverbial or adjectival relation to some other word

Function or "Job":
links a noun to another word

Example Words:
to, at, after, on, but

Example Sentences:
We went to school on Monday.

Conjunction

Definition: A conjunction (abbreviated or ) is a part of speech that connects two words, phrases or clauses together. This definition may overlap with that of other parts of speech, so what constitutes a "conjunction" should be defined for each language.

Function or "Job":
joins clauses or sentences or words

Example Words:
and, but, when

Example Sentences:
I like dogs and I like cats. I like cats and dogs. I like dogs but I don't like cats.

Interjection

Definition: An exclamation or filled pause; a word or phrase with no particular grammatical relation to a sentence, often an expression of emotion; An interruption; something interjected

Function or "Job":
short exclamation, sometimes inserted into a sentence

Example Words:
oh!, ouch!, hi!, well

Example Sentences:
Ouch! That hurts! Hi! How are you? Well, I don't know.

Pronoun

Definition: Pronouns are words that refer to objects in the text or situation in which they are uttered. In this course we mainly consider the personal pronouns he, she and it.

Function or "Job":
replaces a noun

Example Words:
I, you, he, she, some

Example Sentences:
John is American. He is beautiful.

Adverb

Definition: A word (one of the eight parts of speech) used to modify (ie, describe or limit) a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. An adverb indicates time (eg, now, then, today), place (eg, here, there, inside), manner (eg, animatedly, clearly, slowly), or degree (eg, extremely, somewhat, only).

Function or "Job": describes a verb, adjective or adverb

Example Words: quickly, silently, well, badly, very, really

Example Sentences: My cat eats quickly. When she is very hungry, she eats really quickly.
